The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes first appeared in serial form in The Strand magazine in 1891–92 and was published as a book on 14 October 1892. The Sherlock Holmes stories have been adapted for numerous films, television and theatre productions, with more than seventy actors playing the world-famous character in over 200 films. The 1984 television series starring Jeremy Brett, and Sherlock (2010–present), starring Benedict Cumberbatch, are the most well-known TV adaptations, while Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as the detective and his assistant, was the twelfth-highest grossing film of 2011 worldwide.
