The story begins in Hartford, Connecticut, in the late 1940s, where twin brothers are separated at birth due to a desperate and unethical decision by a nurse. One child, Nat Cartwright, grows up in a modest family, while his twin brother, Fletcher Davenport, is raised in a wealthy and influential household. Unaware of each other’s existence, the two brothers lead remarkably parallel yet very different lives. Nat becomes a Vietnam War hero and later a successful banker, while Fletcher rises as a brilliant lawyer and enters the world of politics.
